The Rolex Milgauss was first introduced in 1956 for scientists and engineers working near strong magnetic fields, its name drawn from the French "mille" and "gauss," a nod to its resistance to magnetic flux of 1,000 gauss. Reference 116400 revived the model in 2007 with a 40mm Oystersteel case and smooth bezel, and the white-dial version is set apart by its orange-tipped hour markers and the collection's signature orange lightning-bolt seconds hand, a direct reference to the original. The Milgauss line was discontinued by Rolex in 2023, making the modern references increasingly sought after.
Inside is the Rolex calibre 3131, a self-winding movement fitted with a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and protected by a magnetic shield built into the case, offering approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Water resistance is 100 meters, and the Oyster bracelet closes with an Oysterlock safety clasp.
