The Rolex Explorer II was introduced in 1971 as a tool watch for cave explorers, speleologists and polar researchers, people working in conditions where day and night become hard to tell apart. Its fixed 24-hour graduated bezel and bright orange arrow-tipped 24-hour hand let the wearer read the time unambiguously around the clock, or track a second time zone. Reference 226570, launched in 2021, carries this lineage forward in a 42 mm Oystersteel Oyster case with a white dial, the configuration collectors know as the "Polar." The dial uses Chromalight hour markers and hands with long-lasting blue luminescence, framed by black-outlined indices that keep it highly legible, with a date window magnified by a Cyclops lens at 3 o'clock.

Inside is the Rolex calibre 3285, a self-winding mechanical movement manufactured entirely in-house. It features a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers and a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. The hour hand can be set independently in one-hour jumps for travel, without stopping the watch, while the 24-hour hand keeps reference time. The watch is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, with precision of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing, and is waterproof to 100 metres.
