The Patek Philippe Nautilus traces its roots to 1976, when Gérald Genta designed the original reference 3700 as one of the first luxury sports watches in steel, taking inspiration from the porthole of an ocean liner. The 5711/1A arrived in 2006 to mark the collection's 30th anniversary and became the defining modern Nautilus, prized for its slim profile and integrated bracelet. This first-series 5711/1A-001 carries a black-blue gradient dial with the signature horizontal embossed pattern and luminous applied baton markers, set in a stainless steel case with the octagonal bezel and distinctive side "ears" that define the design.
Inside is the Patek Philippe calibre 324 S C, a self-winding movement with a central gold rotor, sweep seconds and a date aperture at 3 o'clock, visible through the sapphire caseback. The case is water resistant to 120 metres, unusual for a watch this thin, and the integrated steel bracelet closes with Patek Philippe's Nautilus fold-over clasp.
