The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch reference 3572.50.00, commonly called the “Hesalite Sandwich,” combines the traditional front construction of the classic Moonwatch with a transparent sapphire caseback. Its 42mm stainless-steel case, black dial, three-register chronograph layout and external tachymeter bezel preserve the familiar appearance of the Speedmaster Professional.

Unlike the later “Sapphire Sandwich,” the 3572.50.00 uses a domed Hesalite crystal over the dial. Hesalite produces the warm visual distortion associated with vintage Speedmasters and is the same type of crystal used on the watches qualified by NASA for spaceflight. The sapphire exhibition caseback reveals the decorated hand-wound movement, providing a view normally hidden behind the Moonwatch’s solid caseback.

Most examples are powered by the rhodium-plated Omega calibre 1863, a decorated version of the calibre 1861. It uses a cam-operated chronograph mechanism, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Early-production examples can instead contain the gilt-finished calibre 863, making the movement and serial number important when dating an individual watch.

The reference was produced during a transitional period for Omega. Earlier watches from approximately 1995 through 1997 can feature tritium dials and hands, while later examples use Super-LumiNova. The reference was discontinued around 2003 and replaced by the 3573.50.00, which changed the front crystal from Hesalite to sapphire.
