The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is widely credited as one of the earliest true dive watches, developed in the early 1950s in response to a request from French Navy combat divers for an instrument that could reliably track time underwater. This reference 807 carries the model's original design language, with a black dial built for maximum underwater legibility and a rotating bezel used to monitor elapsed dive time, the same basic formula that went on to define the modern dive watch category. The stainless steel case follows the compact, purposeful proportions typical of Blancpain's earliest Fifty Fathoms production.
Inside is a self-winding movement, reflected in the "Rotomatic" name Blancpain used for its automatic calibres of the era, driving simple hours, minutes, and seconds functions. As with all watches from this early period of dive watch development, its water resistance and shock protection were built specifically around the demands of military and professional diving.
